Why Prompts Are No Longer So Important When Using AI?
With Intent AI, which understands a user’s intent and context and carries work through to completion, there is no need to labor over every prompt.
AI responds quickly even to a short request, but its answer does not automatically become something I can use in my work. The same request can call for different results depending on its purpose, circumstances, and the standards it must meet. To bridge that gap, we add background, list conditions, and revise the prompt again.
AI takes less time to answer, yet we still spend time helping it understand our work. It is time to change how we think about AI. What matters is not how well a prompt is phrased for AI, but how accurately AI understands the user’s intent and whether it can carry that understanding into the next task.
You Do Not Need to Be a Prompt Expert
When you use prompts to ask AI to do a job, a question may come to mind:
“Why do I have to explain everything from scratch every time?”
Consider a document that will be shared within a team and also sent to a client. The content and tone need to differ. Colleagues need the reasoning behind decisions and a view of what remains unresolved; clients need confirmed information and a clear explanation. Even a highly capable AI will produce only a superficial rewrite if you simply ask it to “write this better for the client.”
So, in pursuit of a perfect result, we assign personas, set constraints, and devote ourselves to so-called “prompt engineering.” While we are busy enough with our actual work, we end up spending energy studying how to communicate with a machine.
We cannot dispense with prompts altogether. But the situation changes when AI understands the user’s context particularly well. We no longer need to fuss over individual words, repeatedly revise prompts, or explain the same things again and again.
That is why Palette says prompts are becoming less important and emphasizes Intent AI.
What Does Palette Mean by Intent AI
For Palette, Intent AI focuses on the purpose behind a request rather than the wording of the sentence entered. It starts by understanding not only what result is needed, but why it is needed and which context and standards should guide the work. If those standards are unclear, it asks the user first instead of filling in the gaps on its own.
Through its vision of Authentic Intelligence, Palette describes AI that extends people’s own judgment and ways of working. Rather than having users design a new prompt for each model, AI should connect the right tools for the nature and context of the work and carry the task forward. Throughout that process, the user still sets the direction and boundaries. AI should work from context, but ask and confirm whenever judgment is required. That is how it gets closer to results that can be used in real work.
Don’t Prompt, Start Palette
Palette’s “Intent to Completion” treats the path from understanding an intention to finishing the work as one continuous flow: connect the context and complete the result under the user’s control. It places greater value on understanding the person and purpose behind a request than on writing increasingly elaborate prompts.
The accuracy of AI that knows me well is evident not in a plausible answer, but in completed work that fits my needs.
